Maintenance

Maintenance Guideline for Sod (for Hydro Seeding, please scroll down)

Proper Watering: Once the sod has knit, it should be watered enough over the first few months to maintain healthy growing conditions. After the sod is well established, deep watering at a 4 to 7 day intervals as suggested, depending on soil texture and weather conditions. Water until one inch of water has accumulated in a flat container such as a pie plate. Water during daylight hours. Late evening watering during hot weather may create fungus problems.

Proper Fertilization: Follow the SKAGIT CITY TURF FERTILIZER PROGRAM as follows:

Apply 7 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. every six weeks FEBRUARY thru NOVEMBER and 8 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. in FEBRUARY and NOVEMBER. When growth is progressing rapidly, fertilizer is essential. The lawn must be fertilized 30 days after installation regardless of the month. When well established the above formula should be followed.

The fertilizer used should be complete with a balance of nutrients, such as 21-7-14 and applied at the rate of 7 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft as indicated above. If another fertilizer is used, please follow directions of manufacturer.

Overseeding: To help maintain a dense weed-free turf, we recommend occasional overseeding in September or April with 7 lbs. of seed per 1000 sq. ft of lawn. SKAGIT CITY TURF SALES OFFICE has the seed to match your lawn.

Maintenance Guideline for Hydro Seeding

Important!
Begin Watering Immediately!

Care and Watering of your Hydro-Mulched Lawn

Your Hydro-mulching application contains grass seed that requires a continuous supply of moisture in order to germinate. This moisture may come from rainfall or watering.

Initial Watering

During the establishment phase, once-a-day watering is usually appropriate during spring and fall. However, the weather conditions may require more or less water. On hot summer days three or more times a day may be required. Avoid making puddles and/or washing away hydro mulching topsoil, but water thoroughly. Do not water during the hottest part of the day, 10am to 4pm you may burn the grass.

Mowing

A new lawn should be mowed as soon as the grass blades are 2-3 inches tall. Delaying the first cutting may allow long grass blades to bend over, causing a shabby appearance. Subsequent mowing should be done often and lawn mower blades should always be kept sharp to prevent bruised and torn grasses, which develop unsightly brown spots. A good rule of thumb is to never mow off more than one-third of the grass during any one cutting.

Initial Fertilizing Program

The lawn will need a strong application of balanced fertilizer after the first mowing and again 30 days later. Apply fertilizer on the lawn area when it is dry, then water thoroughly. Repeat in 30 days. Use standard balanced fertilizer, which is available at most any lawn supply store such as: 21-7-14, 16-16-16, 15-5-10 or 12-4-8. Apply at recommended rates; usually about 7-8 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. DO NOT USE WEED AND FEED FERTILIZER ON A NEW LAWN. If you have weeds coming up, use a weed killer directly on the weed. We do not recommend a weed killer sprayed over the entire lawn.
